Sulfadiazine Drug Information

Sulfadiazine is a sulfonamide antibiotic, although such sulfonamide antibiotics have rarely been prescribed, sulfadiazine is a useful drug to help prevent recurrence of rheumatic fever.

Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease that has been relatively common among children in the UK, but is now rare. Rheumatic fever develops after an infection with the bacterium Streptococcus and can cause serious damage to the heart. The disease may recur after recovery, so antibiotics such as sulfadiazine are prescribed for a long time to prevent recurrence.

Sulfadiazine is one of the sulfa antibiotics and is prescribed to treat bacterial infections. It helps kill the infection by killing the germs that are responsible for the infection. This drug is not effective in eliminating viral infections.
