Methirapone drug information

Methirapone is a drug that can be used to diagnose Cushing's syndrome and is also sometimes prescribed to treat Cushing's syndrome. Cushing's syndrome is a condition in which the level of a substance called cortisol in your body is too high for a long time. Cortisol is a hormone that is released during times of stress to maintain normal body condition. It also regulates blood pressure, the immune system and blood sugar levels. Normally your body keeps cortisol levels in a certain range so that it is neither too much nor too little. When too much cortisol is produced, symptoms such as weight loss, muscle weakness and bruising occur. Metyrapone inhibits cortisol secretion and helps control these symptoms.

Methirapone is used to treat some types of water retention (edema) caused by an increase in a hormone called aldosterone. This type of water retention may occur due to kidney problems, liver cirrhosis or heart failure. Water retention can cause swelling of the feet, ankles and face.
