Verapamil drug information

Drug Information: Verapamil belongs to a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. This drug prevents calcium from entering muscle cells. Verapamil is used to prescribe a number of cardiovascular diseases. These include irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), high blood pressure, and chest pain in angina.

The walls of blood vessels have certain types of muscle cells. These muscle cells need calcium to contract. Verapamil reduces the amount of calcium entering these cells. This mechanism relaxes muscle cells, dilates blood vessels and reduces heart rate. Dilation of blood vessels reduces blood pressure and increases blood flow to the heart, which improves angina. Because verapamil reduces the entry of calcium into heart cells, it improves conditions in which the heart rate is increased.

Verapamil is also used to prevent migraine headaches in some people. This page does not provide any information. Consult your doctor for this purpose.

Contraindications to the drug verapamil

  • Note the expiration date of verapamil and do not take it if it has expired.
  • Never give verapamil to anyone else, even if you have the same symptoms.
  • Do not take more than the dose prescribed by your doctor.
  • Check for verapamil drug interactions and be sure to tell your doctor what other medications you are taking.
  • Do not take verapamil with grapefruit juice.

Drug interaction with verapamil

Drug interactions may alter drug performance and increase the risk of serious side effects. Make a list of all the medicines (including prescription / over-the-counter and herbal medicines) you use and share them with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not change the dose of your medicine without consulting your doctor or stop taking the medicine.

Tips to consider before taking verapamil

Some medications can not be prescribed under certain conditions, and some medications may be prescribed if additional treatment is needed. Therefore, it is best for your doctor to be aware of the following before taking verapamil:

  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding.
  • If you have heart failure or other heart disease.
  • If you have low blood pressure.
  • If you have liver problems.
  • If you have a blood disease called porphyria.
  • If you are taking certain medications. These medicines include all the medicines available, whether you are prescribed them or taking them without a doctor's prescription, such as herbal medicines and complementary medicines.
  • If you have a history of an allergic reaction to another medicine.

Possible side effects of verapamil

All medications can cause side effects. But many consumers also do not experience any side effects. Some of the side effects go away after a short time of taking the medicine. In case of persistent side effects, the doctor should be informed:

Common side effects:

Constipation: Eat a balanced diet and drink several glasses of water daily. If it persists, consult your doctor.

Less common side effects:

Feeling bored: Eat simple foods and avoid high-fat and spicy foods.

Hot flashes: This will go away in the first few days. If it persists, consult your doctor.

Headache: Ask your doctor to prescribe a suitable painkiller.

Feeling tired and drowsy: Avoid driving and working with tools in this situation.

Swollen ankle: Consult a doctor if this is bothersome.

Talk to your doctor if you have any symptoms that you think may be due to verapamil.

How to store verapamil
