Verapamil drug information
Drug Information: Verapamil belongs to a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. This drug prevents calcium from entering muscle cells. Verapamil is used to prescribe a number of cardiovascular diseases. These include irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), high blood pressure, and chest pain in angina.
The walls of blood vessels have certain types of muscle cells. These muscle cells need calcium to contract. Verapamil reduces the amount of calcium entering these cells. This mechanism relaxes muscle cells, dilates blood vessels and reduces heart rate. Dilation of blood vessels reduces blood pressure and increases blood flow to the heart, which improves angina. Because verapamil reduces the entry of calcium into heart cells, it improves conditions in which the heart rate is increased.
Verapamil is also used to prevent migraine headaches in some people. This page does not provide any information. Consult your doctor for this purpose.
