Medication Information: Vendetanib is a medication prescribed to control the symptoms of medullary thyroid cancer. This rare type of cancer is usually inherited and has a genetic background. This type of cancer starts in the cells of the thyroid gland, which produce the hormone calcitonin.

In cancer, a certain number of cells in the body grow and multiply out of control. Anticancer drugs slow the growth, growth and spread of cancer cells. Vandetanib belongs to a group of anticancer drugs called protein kinase inhibitors. These drugs stop the growth of tumors by inhibiting the production of blood vessels. These drugs may also inhibit the signals needed for cancer cells to grow.
