Rilpivirine Medication Information for AIDS

Drug Information: Rilpivirine is an antiretroviral drug for AIDS. It is prescribed for Acquired Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV). Rilpivirine slows the process of HIV infection but is not a definitive treatment. The HIV virus kills cells in the body called CD4 cells. These cells are white blood cells and they are important because they protect the body against infections. If HIV is not treated, the immune system gradually weakens and loses its ability to defend itself against bacteria, viruses and other microbes.

Rilpivirine belongs to a group of antiretroviral (antiretroviral) drugs called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It is prescribed, along with a number of other antiviral drugs, as part of combination therapy. Taking three or more antiretroviral drugs at the same time is more effective than taking a single drug. Combined use of different drugs reduces the risk of developing resistance to any of the drugs. Combined brands of this drug with other antiretroviral drugs are available in pharmacies.

Rilpivirine for AIDS slows the progression of HIV by reducing the number of viruses in the body. This process strengthens the immune system and reduces the risk of developing HIV-related infections. This medicine can be prescribed by doctors who specialize in HIV.

Rilpivirine is also available in pharmacies in combination with another antiretroviral drug called amtricitabine, and its brand name is Eviplera (Rilpivirine and Amtricitabine).
