Nicardipine Medication Information

Drug Information: Nicardipine belongs to a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. It is used to treat high blood pressure and prevent angina pectoris. This drug relaxes the arteries and thus dilates them. The results of this mechanism are reducing pressure on the heart and reducing heart rate, and also prevents angina pain. Nicardipine does this by blocking the entry of calcium into the smooth muscle walls of the heart's arteries. Calcium is needed for muscle contraction, so reducing this element will relax and open the arteries.

Contraindications to nicardipine

Note the expiration date of Nicardipine and do not take it if it has expired.

Never give nicardipine to anyone else, even if you have the same symptoms.

Do not take more than the dose prescribed by your doctor.

Check for nicardipine drug interactions and be sure to tell your doctor what other medications you are taking.

Nicardipine drug interaction

Drug interactions may alter drug performance and increase the risk of serious side effects. Make a list of all the medicines (including prescription / over-the-counter and herbal medicines) you use and share them with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not change the dose of your medicine without consulting your doctor or stop taking the medicine.

Some medications that may affect nicardipine intake and function include cimetidine, azole antifungals (such as itraconazole), macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin), rifamycins (such as rifabutin), and St. John's wort. Medications used to treat seizures (such as phenytoin).

Check the labels on all your medicines (such as cough and cold medicines, dietary supplements, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen) because they may contain ingredients that increase blood pressure and heart rate. Talk to your pharmacist about taking this medicine.

Tips to consider before taking nicardipine

Some medications can not be prescribed under certain conditions, and some medications may be prescribed if additional treatment is needed. Therefore, it is best for your doctor to be aware of the following before taking nicardipine:

  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding.
  • If you have any cardiovascular problems.
  • If you have angina pain.
  • If you have aortic stenosis (aortic stenosis).
  • If you have a blood disease called porphyria.
  • If you are taking certain medications. These medicines include all the medicines available, whether you are prescribed them or taking them without a doctor's prescription, such as herbal medicines and complementary medicines.
  • If you have a history of an allergic reaction to another medicine.

Possible side effects of nicardipine

All medications can cause side effects. But many consumers also do not experience any side effects. Some of the side effects go away after a short time of taking the medicine. In case of persistent side effects, the doctor should be informed:

Headache, hot flashes: These side effects are usually seen at the beginning of treatment but go away after a few days. Consult your doctor if the headache persists.

Boredom: Eat simple foods and avoid spicy and high-fat foods.

Darkening of the eyes: In this situation, avoid driving and working with tools.

Swollen ankle, palpitations: Consult your doctor if it is bothersome.

Important Note: Some people taking nicardipine may have more severe angina pain. Tell your doctor immediately if this happens to you.
