Methylene Blue Drug Information

Methylene blue is used to treat methemoglobinemia (methemoglobinemia). Methemoglobin is a type of hemoglobin, a substance in the blood that carries oxygen and distributes it in your tissues and organs; However, methemoglobin is not a type of hemoglobin that is useful in carrying oxygen.

Methemoglobin is usually present in small amounts in the blood, but when methemoglobin levels rise, the blood is less able to circulate oxygen. Methemoglobinemia is a disease in which methemoglobin is present in large amounts in the blood and as a result the blood loses the ability to carry oxygen in the body. Methemoglobinemia can occur when a person is exposed to certain medications or chemicals, such as nitrites.

Methylene blue injection is used to treat methemoglobinemia. Methylene blue converts methemoglobin into a more efficient form of hemoglobin, leading to better oxygen delivery in the body.
