Methamphetamine is used to prevent recurrence of urinary tract infections caused by certain bacteria, but it is not used to treat active infections, other antibiotics must first be used to treat the infection. Methamphetamine is an antibiotic that stops the growth of bacteria in the urine. It also contains substances that help acidify urine. When urine is acidic, methamphetamine is converted to formaldehyde to kill bacteria.

This antibiotic is only effective for bacterial urinary tract infections. It will not work for other types of bacterial infections (such as blood clots) or viral infections (such as colds or flu).

Methamphetamine prevents the spread of infection by preventing the growth of bacteria.
