Ketotifen Drug Information

Medication Information: In some people, exposure to substances such as pollen, animal hair, or dust can cause allergy symptoms. Cells in the nasal mucosa produce histamine when exposed to such substances. This leads to inflammation (rhinitis) which results in sneezing and runny nose. Ketotifen, a type of antihistamine, inhibits histamine symptoms and relieves allergy symptoms.

Contraindications to the use of ketotifen

  • Pay attention to the expiration date of ketotifen and do not take it if it has expired.
  • Never give ketotifen to anyone else, even if you have the same symptoms.
  • Do not take more than the dose of ketotifen prescribed by your doctor.
  • Check for drug interactions with ketotifen and be sure to tell your doctor what other medications you are taking.

Ketotifen drug interaction

Drug interactions may alter drug performance and increase the risk of serious side effects. Make a list of all the medicines (including prescription / over-the-counter and herbal medicines) you use and share them with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not change the dose of your medicine without consulting your doctor or stop taking the medicine.

Tips to consider before taking ketotifen

Some medications can not be prescribed under certain conditions, and some medications may be prescribed if additional treatment is needed. Therefore, it is best for your doctor to be aware of the following before taking ketotifen:

  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
  • If you have any liver or kidney disease.
  • If you have glaucoma.
  • If you have prostate problems or difficulty urinating.
  • If you have an intestinal obstruction.
  • If you have porphyria.
  • If you are currently taking certain medications. These medicines include all the medicines available, whether you are prescribed them or taking them without a doctor's prescription, such as herbal medicines and complementary medicines.
  • If you have ever been allergic to any medication.

Possible side effects of ketotifen

All medications, along with their positive effects, can cause unwanted side effects in the body. However, these complications do not occur in all people. Over time, your body will adjust to the new medicine and these symptoms will go away, but if the following symptoms persist or become painful, consult your doctor.

  • Feeling angry, disturbed sleep: Consult your doctor if you are bothered.
  • Drowsiness and drowsiness: Avoid driving and working with tools in this situation.
  • Dry mouth: Use sugar-free gum.

Tell your doctor if you have any other symptoms that you think may be due to ketotifen.

How to store ketotifen

  • Store the medicine in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep the medicine out of the reach of children.
