Hydroxycarbamide drug information

Medication Information: Hydroxycarbamide is used to treat a type of leukemia called chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Hydroxycarbamide may be used to treat cervical cancer along with other medicines. In cancer, cells grow and multiply rapidly. Hydroxycarbamide is used to reduce the proliferation and growth of cancer cells.

Hydroxycarbamide is also used to reduce pain associated with sickle cell disease (sickle cell anemia). In this disease, red blood cells become abnormal and clog blood vessels, causing pain. Hydroxycarbamide reduces pain in patients by preventing cell deformation.

If you have received hydroxycarbamide for the treatment of cancer, the Hydrea brand is prescribed. Siklos tablets are prescribed if hydroxycarbamide is used to treat sickle cell. Whenever you need to buy a new drug, make sure you choose the right brand.

Contraindications to hydroxycarbamide

• Pay attention to the expiration date of the hydroxycarbamide medicine and do not take it if the medicine in your hand has expired.

Never give the medicine to anyone else, even if you have the same symptoms.

• Do not take more than the dose prescribed by your doctor for hydroxycarbamide.

Check for hydroxycarbamide drug interactions and be sure to tell your doctor what other medications you are taking.

Drug interaction with hydroxycarbamide

Drug interactions may alter drug performance and increase the risk of serious side effects. Make a list of all the medicines (including prescription / over-the-counter medicines and herbal products) you use and share them with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not change the dose of your medicine without consulting your doctor or stop taking the medicine.

Tips to consider before taking hydroxycarbamide

Some medications can not be prescribed under certain conditions, and some medications may be prescribed if additional treatment is needed. Therefore, it is best for your doctor to be aware of the following before taking hydroxycarbamide:

• If you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

• If you have liver or kidney problems.

• If you have any injuries to your legs.

• If you are currently taking certain medications. These include all available medicines, whether prescribed or used by your doctor, such as herbal medicines and supplements.

• If you have ever been allergic to any medication.

Possible side effects of hydroxycarbamide

All medications, along with their positive effects, can cause unwanted side effects in the body. However, these complications do not occur in all people. Over time, your body will adjust to the new medicine and these symptoms will go away, but if the following symptoms persist or become painful, consult your doctor.

Decreased white, red blood cell, or platelet counts: Tell your doctor if you have a sore throat or fever. Tell your doctor immediately if you notice any unusual bleeding or bruising on your body.

Feeling bored: Eat simple foods. If this becomes a problem, your doctor will prescribe anti-nausea medication.

Skin changes and mouth sores: Talk to your doctor about this.

Headache: Ask your doctor to prescribe a suitable painkiller.

Talk to your doctor if you have any other symptoms that you feel are caused by hydroxycarbamide.

How to store hydroxycarbamide

• Keep the medicine in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.

• Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
