Hydromorphone drug information

Medication Information: Strong opioids are drugs used to relieve severe pain. Hydromorphone is a potent opioid used to relieve pain felt in cancer. Hydromorphone reduces the amount of pain felt by having a direct effect on the nervous system and the brain.

Hydromorphone is in the form of capsules. There are two types of capsules: fast-acting and fast-acting capsules (Paladone) and slow-release capsules (Paladone SR). Modified drugs slowly release the drug and the effect of the drug lasts for several hours.

Contraindications to the use of hydromorphone

  • Pay attention to the expiration date of the hydromorphone drug and do not take it if the expiration date on your medicine has expired.
  • Never give hydromorphone to anyone else, even if you have the same symptoms.

• Do not take hydromorphone more than the dose prescribed by your doctor.

  • Check for drug interactions with hydromorphone and be sure to tell your doctor what other medication you are taking.

Hydromorphone drug interaction

Drug interactions may alter drug performance and increase the risk of serious side effects. Make a list of all the medicines (including prescription / over-the-counter medicines and herbal products) you use and share them with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not change the dose of your medicine without consulting your doctor or stop taking the medicine.

Some medications that may interact with hydromorphone include specific analgesics (agonist / antagonist mixed analgesics such as pentazocine, nalbuphine, butorphanol), and naltrexone.

If hydromorphone is taken with other medicines that may affect your breathing or cause drowsiness, it may cause serious side effects (such as shallow breathing, drowsiness, and severe dizziness). Other medications such as alcohol, allergies, colds or coughs, anticonvulsants (such as phenobarbital), sleeping pills or anxiety medications (such as alprazolam, diazepam, zolpidem), muscle relaxants, pain relievers (such as codeine, hydrocodone), and Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any medications (such as risperidone, amitriptyline, trazodone).

Hydromorphone may interfere with certain laboratory tests (including amylase / lipase levels) and cause erroneous results. Inform laboratory personnel before use that you have used this medicine.

Tips to consider before taking hydromorphone

Some medications can not be prescribed under certain conditions, and some medications may be prescribed if additional treatment is needed. Therefore, it is best for your doctor to be aware of the following before taking hydromorphone:

• If you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

• If you have liver or kidney disease.

• If you have urinary disorders or prostate problems.

• If you have a respiratory illness such as asthma or acute pulmonary obstruction.

• If you have low blood pressure.

• If you have any thyroid, pancreatic or adrenal problems.

• If you have epilepsy.

• If you have biliary problems.

• If you have chronic constipation or inflammatory bowel problems.

• If you have myasthenia gravis.

• If you have a mental disorder such as psychosis.

• If you have recently had a head injury.

• If you are addicted to drugs.

• If you are currently taking certain medications. These medicines include all the medicines available, whether you are prescribed them or taking them without a doctor's prescription, such as herbal medicines and complementary medicines.

• If you have ever been allergic to any medication.

Possible side effects of hydromorphone

All medications, along with their positive effects, can cause unwanted side effects in the body. However, these complications do not occur in all people. Over time, your body will adjust to the new medication and these symptoms will go away, but if the following symptoms persist or become painful, consult your doctor.

Feeling bored: Eat simple foods. Avoid spicy and high-fat foods. Take hydromorphone after eating.

Shallow breathing: Tell your doctor.

Darkening of the eyes, drowsiness: In this situation, avoid driving and working with tools.

Constipation: Eat a good diet and drink several glasses of water daily. Consult your doctor if these problems persist.

Dry mouth: Use sugar-free gum.

Feeling confused, itchy, mood swings, disturbed sleep, headache, urinary problems, hot flashes, hives: If any of these things bother you, consult your doctor.

Tell your doctor if you have any other symptoms that you think may be due to hydromorphone.

How to store hydromorphone

• Store the medicine in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

• Keep the medicine out of the reach of children.
