Galantamine Drug Information

Medication Information: Galantamine is prescribed for people with dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease. It helps with thought-provoking symptoms, such as memory loss and confusion. Galantamine is not a cure, but it does slow the progression of symptoms in some people.

Galantamine raises the level of a chemical called acetylcholine, which binds to nerve cells in the brain, and is low in people with dementia. Signs and symptoms of dementia can be improved by increasing acetylcholine levels. Galantamine is prescribed by a specialist doctor. If you are a nurse, please read the Galantamine leaflet.

Be sure to tell your doctor before taking galantamine if you are taking heart medications such as beta-blockers (eg, metoprolol, propranolol), calcium channel blockers (eg, diltiazem, verapamil), and digoxin.

Check labels on all prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking, including painkillers / fever medications (aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen). These drugs, if taken with galantamine, may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

If your doctor prescribes low-dose aspirin (usually 325-81 mg per day) to prevent a stroke or heart attack, you should continue taking it unless your doctor tells you to stop taking aspirin. Consult your pharmacist for more details.
