Gabapentin Drug Information

Drug Information: Gabapentin belongs to the group of antiepileptic drugs. However, it is also used to treat several other diseases. Gabapentin may also be used to treat minor seizures, a type of migraine. A seizure is a transient condition caused by electrical changes in the brain. This electrical activity occurs in a small part of the brain. Therefore, the symptoms that occur occur regionally. Gabapentin helps control seizure symptoms by reducing abnormal electrical changes in the brain. Of course, it is not yet clear how gabapentin works.

Gabapentin is also used to treat chronic pain caused by nerve damage. This type of pain is called neuropathic and occurs due to various diseases such as diabetes (diabetic neuropathy) and shingles (posthereptic neuralgia).

Although gabapentin is licensed for the treatment of epilepsy and neuropathic pain, gabapentin is also used to prevent migraine attacks. If you have been prescribed medication for this purpose, ask your doctor questions.

• Pay attention to the expiration date of the medicine and do not take it if the medicine in your hand has expired.

Never give the medicine to anyone else, even if you have the same symptoms.

• Do not take more than the dose prescribed by your doctor.

Check for drug interactions and be sure to tell your doctor what other medications you are taking.

• You may become drowsy after taking the medicine, do not drive until you are fully conscious.

Do not take antacids for two hours before or after taking gabapentin.

Gabapentin drug interaction

Drug interactions may alter drug performance and increase the risk of serious side effects. Make a list of all the medicines (including prescription / over-the-counter medicines and herbal products) you use and share them with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not change the dose of your medicine without consulting your doctor or stop taking the medicine.

Tips to consider before taking gabapentin

Some medications can not be prescribed under certain conditions, and some medications may be prescribed if additional treatment is needed. Therefore, it is best for your doctor to be aware of the following before taking gabapentin:

• If you decide to have a baby or are pregnant or if you are breast-feeding.

• If you have kidney problems.

• If you have diabetes.

• If you have a mental illness.

• If you are currently taking certain medications. These include all available medicines, whether prescribed or used by your doctor, such as herbal medicines and supplements.

• If you have ever been allergic to a particular medicine.

Possible side effects of gabapentin

All drugs, in addition to their positive effects, can cause unwanted side effects in the body. However, these complications do not occur in all people. Over time, your body will adjust to the new medicine and these symptoms will go away, but if the following symptoms persist or become painful, consult your doctor.

Drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, blurred vision, and other vision problems: Avoid driving or operating tools.

Headache: Ask your doctor to prescribe a suitable painkiller.

Feeling sick, indigestion, stomach ache: Eat simple foods and avoid high-fat and spicy foods.

Diarrhea: Drink plenty of water to replenish lost water.

Constipation: Eat a balanced diet and drink several glasses of water daily.

Dry mouth: Chew sugar-free gum.

Infection, flu-like symptoms, fever, high blood pressure, weight change, mood swings, movement problems, tremors, sleep problems, respiratory problems, cough, gum problems, bruising, joint pain, impotence, Swollen feet and ankles: Consult your doctor if any of the above are annoying.

Important Note: Gabapentin may have a number of side effects that may affect the blood, pancreas and liver. Although these are less common, tell your doctor right away if you notice any of the following.

Chronic stomach pain (this can be caused by inflammation of the pancreas).

Skin urticaria, and any swelling in the mouth and face (these can be caused by drug allergies).

Any yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (these are signs of jaundice).

• Any bruising or abnormal bleeding (these are signs of a blood disorder).

Talk to your doctor if you have any other symptoms that you think may be due to gabapentin.

How to store gabapentin

• Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.

• Keep the medicine in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.

• Once opened in gabapentin syrup, it can be used for a month. After this period, stop using it and prepare a new syrup.
