Cubicistat Drug Information
Cubicistat is an antiretroviral drug. It is used to control the symptoms of HIV infection. Cubicistat reduces the progression and proliferation of HIV but is not a definitive treatment. The HIV virus destroys cells in the body called CD4 cells. These cells are very important for the body to defend against a variety of infections. If HIV infection is not treated, the immune system gradually weakens and loses the ability to fight off various infections.
Cubicistat helps keep the immune system healthy by reducing the amount of virus that enters the body's immune cells. Cubicistat is usually given in combination with three or more antiretroviral drugs because combination therapy for HIV reduces the virus's resistance to drugs and the use of combination drugs increases the effectiveness of the drugs. It should be noted that antiretroviral drugs reduce the progression of HIV infection, but do not cure the infection.
Atazanavir and darunavir are both antiretroviral drugs that inhibit proteases, and cubicistat is given with these two drugs to enhance their effects by preventing them from breaking down and increasing their shelf life.
Some of the hybrid brands of cubicistat mentioned above contain other antiretroviral drugs that your doctor may prescribe based on your patient's symptoms.
