Colchicine Pharmacological Information

Gout causes painful inflammatory attacks in one or more joints. This process is caused by the accumulation of chemicals in the blood called uric acid. Sometimes the level of uric acid in the blood rises sharply and crystalline bodies form in the joints and tendons, these crystals irritate the muscle tissue resulting in inflammation, pain and swelling.

The most common treatment for gout attacks is an anti-inflammatory painkiller, but some people may not be able to take these medications. Colchicine is an alternative treatment to prevent gout attacks for people who cannot take anti-inflammatory drugs. Colchicine reduces pain and gout attacks by reducing the number of white blood cells in the inflamed areas. This helps to eliminate the inflammatory cycle of the immune system and reduces swelling and pain in gout.

Amount and method of taking colchicine

  • Read the package leaflet carefully before starting treatment with colchicine. This brochure will help you to get comprehensive information about the drug and its possible side effects.
  • The dose and amount of colchicine varies from person to person; Use the medicine exactly as your doctor advised. Doctors usually recommend that you take a pill 2 to 4 times a day when your gout attacks start to reduce your pain. Note that you should not take more than 12 pills in each period of gout attack. If your gout attacks are frequent, you should take 3 days between each dose of Sin.
  • If your doctor has prescribed other medications to prevent gout attacks (such as allopurinol and phoboxostat), and you are taking cinnamon to prevent mild gout attacks, the usual dose is one tablet twice a day.
  • Swallow the medicine with some water, do not chew in your mouth before swallowing.
  • If you forget to take your daily dose of colchicine at a set time and remember that the next dose is close to one hour, do not take the missed dose. You should not take two doses of the medicine together because of the missed dose.

Contraindications to colchicine

  • Pay attention to the expiration date of the colchicine medicine and do not take it if the medicine in your hand has expired.
  • Never give colchicine to another person, even if you have the same symptoms.
  • Check for colchicine drug interactions, and if you are using a drug that interacts with this drug, talk to your doctor about using your medications.

Colchicine use during pregnancy and lactation

During pregnancy and lactation, you should not use the drug arbitrarily and without consulting your doctor. Medications can have devastating effects on the fetus or on yourself.

The effect of colchicine on driving and working with machines

Colchicine may confuse or make you drowsy, so make sure you are alert before driving or operating machinery.

Colchicine drug interactions

Drug interactions may alter drug performance and increase the risk of serious side effects. Make a list of all the medicines (including prescription / over-the-counter and herbal medicines) you use and share them with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not change the dose of your medicine without consulting your doctor or stop taking the medicine.

Some drugs can affect the removal of colchicine from the body and increase the risk of side effects by affecting the function of this drug; These include azole antifungal drugs (eg itraconazole, ketoconazole), HIV drugs (such as ritonavir), macrolide antibiotics (such as clarithromycin, erythromycin), telithromycin, and verapamil.

Colchicine may rarely cause serious (even fatal) muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis). This muscle damage causes the release of substances that can lead to serious kidney problems. The risk of rhabdomyolysis increases if you take the following medications with cessin; Some of these drugs are: atorvastatin, digoxin, gemfibrozil, pravastatin, simvastatin and…

Colchicine may interfere with certain laboratory tests and cause erroneous results. Ask your doctor or nurse before taking the test if you can use this medicine.

Special warnings and precautions while taking colchicine

Some medications may not be prescribed under certain conditions, and some medications may be prescribed if additional treatment is needed; Therefore, it is best for your doctor to be aware of the following before taking colchicine:

  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding.
  • If you have kidney or liver problems.
  • If you have a blood disorder or problem.
  • If you have heart problems.
  • If you have a problem with your digestive system.
  • If you are taking certain medications. These medicines include all the medicines available, whether you are prescribed them or taking them without a doctor's prescription, such as herbal medicines and complementary medicines.
  • If you have a history of an allergic reaction to a drug.

Side effects of colchicine

All medications can cause side effects. But many consumers also do not experience any side effects. Some of the side effects go away after a short time of taking the medicine. In case of persistent side effects, the physician should be informed:

  • Feeling sick, diarrhea and abdominal pain: Try to eat simple foods without spices. Drink plenty of water to make up for lost water.

Consult your doctor if you have any other symptoms that you feel are due to colchicine.

Colchicine overdose (drug poisoning)

  • Do not take Colchicine more than the dose prescribed by your doctor.
  • If you feel that someone has been poisoned and you have symptoms such as severe nausea / vomiting / diarrhea, abdominal pain, shortness of breath or fainting (fainting), call the emergency room right away.

Storage conditions of colchicine

  • Keep the medicine out of the reach of children.
  • Store the medicine in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.
