Sidofovir, along with probenecid, is used to treat certain viral eye infections (retinitis due to cytomegalovirus-CMV) in people with AIDS. This drug reduces the risk of blindness and other vision problems. Cidofovir belongs to a class of drugs known as antiviral drugs. It works by stopping the virus from growing. Cidofovir is not a definitive treatment for CMV retinitis, and your condition may get worse during and after treatment.

 

The correct amount and method of taking sidofovir

  • Read the package leaflet carefully before starting treatment with this medicine. This brochure will help you to get information about the drug and its possible side effects.
  • The dose and amount of Cidofovir varies from person to person; Take one pill exactly as your doctor advised. It is usually given intravenously every 1-2 weeks (for one hour).
  • Discontinue your Cidofovir or AIDS medication immediately or do not reduce the dose without consulting your doctor.
  • Do not inject this medicine into your eye.
  • If you forget to take your daily dose at the right time but soon forget to take it; But if you remember when the next dose is near the hour, do not take the missed dose. You should not take two doses of the medicine together because of the missed dose.

During the previous 7 days and during treatment with this drug, other drugs that may damage your kidneys (eg amphotericin B, foscarnet, pentamidine, vancomycin, aminoglycosides including tobramycin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen) Do not use. In some cases, serious (possibly fatal) kidney damage may occur.

Check the labels on all your medicines as they may contain NSAIDs (eg ibuprofen and naproxen). Ask your pharmacist how to use the medication safely.

 

Warning about taking Cidofovir

Some medications may not be prescribed under certain conditions, and some medications may be prescribed if additional treatment is needed; Therefore, it is best for your doctor to be aware of the following before taking Sidofovir:

  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or if you are breast-feeding.
  • If you have a kidney problem.

  • If you have a history of an allergic reaction to a drug.

 

Side effects of sidofovir

  • Nausea
  • Vomit
  • Headache
  • Wound pain
  • Frequent urination
